IPOB urges Appeal court to void Kanu’s conviction, cites FG’s cross-appeal
By Steve Oko
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed optimism over the ongoing appellate proceedings involving its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that the Federal Government’s recent cross-appeal has strengthened its case for his release.
In a statement issued on Saturday by IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, the group said it had carefully reviewed the Federal Government’s Notice of Cross-Appeal against a judgment delivered by the Federal High Court, Abuja, on November 20, 2025.
According to IPOB, the Federal Government, in its appeal documents, raised issues regarding the trial court’s jurisdiction in relation to certain aspects of the proceedings.
The group argued that such a position has significant implications for the validity of the conviction and sentencing.
IPOB maintained that questions surrounding jurisdiction strike at the heart of judicial proceedings and should be thoroughly considered by the Court of Appeal.
The group cited legal authorities, including the Supreme Court’s decision in Madukolu v. Nkemdilim, to support its contention that where jurisdiction is lacking, proceedings may be rendered invalid.
The pro-Biafra movement further argued that the appellate court should carefully examine the issues raised in the appeals and arrive at a decision that reflects the interests of justice and the rule of law.
Reaffirming its support for Kanu, IPOB described him as a steadfast advocate of the Biafran cause and insisted that legal and political pressures would not diminish the aspirations of those who support self-determination.
The group called on the Court of Appeal to allow Kanu’s appeal and order his release, expressing confidence that the judicial process would ultimately vindicate its leader.
Kanu has remained a central figure in Nigeria’s legal and political discourse, with proceedings surrounding his case continuing to attract national and international attention.
