Xenophobia: Tyla Removes Lagos From APOP World Tour
South African singer Tyla has removed Lagos, Nigeria, from the list of cities on her APOP World Tour, following widespread backlash and growing calls for a boycott over renewed xenophobia concerns involving Nigerians in South Africa.
The Grammy-winning singer had earlier announced that she would perform in Lagos as part of her world tour. However, the Nigerian stop has now disappeared from the updated tour schedule, fueling speculation that the decision was influenced by the controversy surrounding her planned visit.
The development comes days after some Nigerians, including actress Mama Pee, criticized Tyla’s planned performance in Lagos amid reports of renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Mama Pee had urged the singer to stay away from Nigeria, while several social media users called for a boycott of the concert, arguing that South African entertainers should not be welcomed while Nigerians continue to face hostility abroad.
The removal of Lagos from the tour has sparked mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians have welcomed the decision, others believe music and entertainment should not be affected by political and social tensions between the two countries.
As of the time of this report, Tyla and her management have not publicly stated the reason for removing Lagos from the tour schedule.
The incident has reignited conversations about xenophobia, cultural exchange, and the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, with many calling for lasting solutions to protect citizens of both countries.
