Akpabio urges unity against insecurity

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to support efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime, stressing that security requires the collective vigilance and cooperation of citizens.

Akpabio made the call on Sunday in Abuja during an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking on the theme, “Democracy, Faith and the Soul of a Nation,” the Senate President said the abduction of innocent citizens, particularly children, remains a source of concern and requires sustained efforts by government, security agencies and communities.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies and support initiatives aimed at improving safety across the country.

According to him, while government remains committed to addressing insecurity, citizens also have an important role to play in strengthening community security and supporting lawful efforts to combat criminal activities.

Akpabio noted that democracy should extend beyond the conduct of elections and be anchored on accountability, justice, compassion and service to the common good.

He said leadership should be viewed as a public trust and governance as a responsibility aimed at improving the lives of citizens.

The Senate President also encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite current challenges, expressing confidence in the country’s democratic future and capacity for national renewal.

Addressing young people, he urged them to participate actively in democratic processes and contribute positively to nation-building through innovation, civic engagement and constructive involvement in public affairs.

Akpabio further called for national unity, saying Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a strength that can contribute to the country’s progress and stability.

He also offered prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, public institutions, security agencies and citizens, expressing hope for continued peace, development and democratic growth in the country.

The Democracy Day service brought together government officials, religious leaders and other stakeholders to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and aspirations for national development.
