IPOB hails observance of Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has commended residents of the South-East and other parts of the country for what it described as the successful observance of the May 30 Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day held in honour of those who died during the Nigerian civil war.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the annual event was a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering the sacrifices of those it referred to as fallen heroes and heroines.
IPOB expressed appreciation to Biafrans, supporters of the movement and advocates of self-determination who participated in the remembrance activities both within Nigeria and across the world.
The group particularly thanked residents of states in the South-East and parts of the South-South and North-Central regions for their participation in what it described as peaceful memorial activities and commemorative gatherings.
According to the statement, the observance of the day was aimed at reflecting on the experiences and losses suffered during the civil war and preserving the memory of those who died in the conflict.
IPOB also acknowledged the participation of its supporters in various countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, China, Japan, India and the United Arab Emirates, among others, where memorial events, prayer sessions and awareness campaigns were reportedly held.
The group said the annual remembrance had become an important part of its efforts to preserve the history of the Biafran struggle and honour those who lost their lives during the war.
It further urged younger generations to learn about the history of the conflict and the sacrifices made by those who died during the period.
The statement reiterated the group’s commitment to keeping alive the memory of the victims of the civil war and ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
May 30 is observed annually by IPOB and other pro-Biafra groups as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day in honour of those who died during the 1967–1970 Nigerian civil war.
