From South-East London to a Royal Throne! SE Dons Captain George Desmond Kamurasi Selected as Tooro’s Next King
George Desmond Kamurasi, captain and goalkeeper of South-East London football club SE Dons, has been selected as the preferred successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom.
The remarkable development has put the 36-year-old footballer at the centre of an extraordinary story that stretches from non-league football in London to one of Uganda’s most historic traditional kingdoms.
Kamurasi, popularly known as “Big G,” was reportedly selected by the Tooro Royal Succession Committee following the death of his cousin, King Oyo, who died in the United States in August 2026 while receiving treatment for cancer.
From SE Dons captain to potential king
Kamurasi currently lives in London and captains SE Dons, who compete in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division.
The goalkeeper has become known for his leadership on the pitch, including his passionate team talks and commanding presence between the posts.
Now, his leadership skills could be transferred from the football pitch to the royal institution of Tooro.
Reports say a 21-member succession committee met in Fort Portal on September 4, with 15 of the 18 members present reportedly voting in Kamurasi’s favour.
He is not officially King yet
Despite headlines describing Kamurasi as the next king, there is an important distinction.
He has been selected as the preferred successor, but his accession has not yet been formally confirmed or completed.
According to reports, the formal proclamation is expected following the burial of King Oyo, in accordance with Tooro’s traditional succession process.
Kamurasi’s royal roots
The footballer’s connection to the Tooro throne is not accidental.
Kamurasi comes from the Babiito royal family and is a first cousin of the late King Oyo.
His father, Prince George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, was the younger brother of King Oyo’s father, the late King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. Kamurasi’s grandfather was King George Rukidi III.
That royal lineage forms the basis of his reported claim to the throne.
A remarkable football journey
Kamurasi’s story extends beyond royalty.
Before becoming one of the most recognisable figures at SE Dons, he went through a difficult period in his youth, including time in prison following the death of his mother.
He later credited football with helping him turn his life around.
His journey eventually took him into coaching, mentoring and non-league football, where he became a leader at SE Dons.
Will he leave London for Tooro?
That remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the succession.
Reports indicate that Kamurasi is settled in London with his family and may be reluctant to leave his life in England to take up his traditional responsibilities in Uganda.
There is also an unusual football-related complication: SE Dons have a cup fixture around the same period as King Oyo’s funeral, potentially creating a remarkable clash between Kamurasi’s football commitments and his royal family obligations.
A new chapter for Tooro
The Tooro Kingdom is one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms. Its king, known as the Omukama, serves primarily as a cultural and traditional leader rather than a political ruler.
If formally proclaimed, Kamurasi’s journey would represent one of the most unusual transitions in modern football and African royalty — from goalkeeper and football captain in South-East London to Omukama of Tooro.
For now, however, the crown remains pending.
George Desmond Kamurasi has been selected. The formal accession is still to come.
