Nigerians Attempt Guinness World Record with 431-Hour Reading Marathon in Lagos
In an inspiring display of endurance and passion for literature, five Nigerians—three men and two women—have embarked on a 431-hour reading-aloud marathon in Lagos. The remarkable attempt aims to secure a Guinness World Record while raising awareness about the importance of literacy and education in Nigeria.
Over a period of 18 days, the group read aloud 79 books authored by Nigerians, covering diverse themes such as migration, finance, history, and culture. The event has captured attention nationwide, not only for its bold Guinness record attempt but also for its underlying message of promoting literacy in a country where the literacy rate stands at just 63%, with more than 10 million children out of school.
Organizers emphasized that the marathon was designed to highlight the richness of Nigerian literature and to encourage young people to embrace reading as a tool for empowerment and personal growth.
The Guinness World Records team is currently reviewing the attempt for official certification. If validated, this feat will go down in history as one of the longest reading marathons ever completed.
